定年退職間近の刑事サマセットと新人のミルズは、ある殺人現場に向かう。そこには肥満の大男の凄惨な死体があった。またほどなくして、今度はビジネスマンの死体が発見される。サマセットはそれぞれの現場に残されていた文字から、犯人がキリスト教における七つの大罪（傲慢・嫉妬・憤怒・怠惰・強欲・暴食・色欲）に因んだ殺人に及んでいると分析、残るは５件となった。事件を未然に防ごうと犯人の特定を急ぐ２人。やがて一人の男が容疑者に浮上、しかし接近するも取り逃がし、さらなる犠牲者を出してしまう。そんな中、大罪に沿った犯行が残り２件となったところで、犯人を名乗る男が自首して来るのだが…。
